Where there is a need, there is Hope

DISASTER RELIEF STATION

MEDIA RELEASE

MAJOR GLOBAL RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS PARTNER WITH A LOCAL CHARITY TO ROLL IN ON THE HEELS OF HURRICANE IRENE FOCUSING THEIR EFFORTS TO PROVIDE PRACTICAL RELIEF OF SUPPLIES AND SERVICES.

OPERATION COMPASSION has agreed to partner with our “homegrown” local nonprofit organization, HOPE CHARITABLE SERVICES, to bring vital relief in the form of resources and services to those impacted by Hurricane Irene. In fact, OPERATION COMPASSION has 50 tractor-trailers filled with supplies and resources pre-staged, for Irene Relief, waiting on HOPE's call. This is a phenomenal step, for OPERATION COMPASSION and their partners (GOD'S PIT CREW, MERCY CHEFS, MEN & WOMEN OF ACTION, CHURCH OF GOD CHAPLINS COMMISSION, GLEANING FOR THE WORLD and BRIDGE OF HOPE) will establish a unified presence in our region. These organizations have committed to combine their efforts to create one central site to better serve those in need in the inner city of Portsmouth (MidCity/Westhaven) and to work as partners by supporting other outlying sites.

HOPE's founding director, Bishop Frank Allen says. “This is a genuine blessing! Even though we move millions of dollars in relief goods from our warehouses here in Hampton Roads to Appalachia, Migrant Camps, Rural Poverty Pockets, Native American Reservations and Inner Cities across the commonwealth, throughout the United States and to the poorest of the poor in 26 third world countries, we found ourselves unprepared for this disaster. Our warehouse is currently filled with used school furnishings and medical equipment to send to third world countries along with routine goods for our regular distributions (we also serve more than 9,000 individuals in over 3,000 homes during most months). We were so discouraged because we had no suitable supplies in our warehouse to serve our Tidewater community. If it were not for this relationship, we could not serve our neighbors or this region in our most desperate hour. We thank God for OPERATION COMPASSION, and we have committed to partner with them to bring hope to those suffering here in Virginia and North Carolina.“ Bishop Allen further shared, “his other partners, OPERATION BLESSING, WORLD VISION and THE BAPTIST MEN, have committed to support HOPE's efforts as well. All these partners are coming in with greater force than Irene, undoing the devastation that she left. Everything from heavy equipment to chain saws will immediately begin clearing the debris. Mobile kitchens and showers, along with food, brand new clothing, ice and other needed items will meet personal needs during a very difficult time.”

WESTEND UNITED METHODIST CHURCH will allow the unified relief site to be set up on their property at the corner of Rodman Ave and Winchester Drive in the Mid City / Westhaven Park area of Portsmouth. Supplies to be shared throughout the region will be received and distributed from HOPE'S and corporate partners' warehouses. Their combined community service phone number is 757.639.9109.
